The Beginning!

Today is March 1st, and this morning Erin and I officially began our Backyard Restoration/Urban Garden/Chicken Raising Project Extravaganza.

We have spent the past few weeks making plans for the backyard.  We have researched chickens, chicken coops, chicken diets, chicken breeds, chicken eggs, and chickens' favorite things to do on the weekend.  We have mulled over what kinds of yummy vegetables, fruits, and flowers we want to grow and where we want to grow them.  We have watched the sun and the shadows move around the yard.  We have traveled to the garden center and back.  We have recruited a chicken posse!  So far the posse includes Craig Johnson - master chicken coop builder and Next Door Neighbor - general neighbor to chickens.

We have weeded.  We have tilled.  We have written a theme song.

And this morning... we put our first seeds in the ground!
Kale
Lettuce
Arugula
Rainbow Chard
Spinach
Broccoli
Yum!

Here are some pictures of our garden before we weeded, tilled, and planted.

That broccoli plant survived over the winter from our fall garden.  Erin has been kissing it every morning for its bravery.

Here are some pictures of what we did today!

I made a stick-ruler so we could measure how far apart we were planting the seeds.  Each notch is an inch.

Seeds.

The finished product.  I can't wait to see little buds!!
